Hillside House

Year: 2019 | Location: Provence, Lorgues | Status: concept | Client: private | Size: 190 m²
Designers: Tim Kouthoofd, Piotr Szczesniak

This conceptual house is situated on the southern slope of a hill in the wine region of Provence, between the Gorges du Verdon and the Côte d’Azur. The steep topography of the site allowed for an upside-down typology.

The bedrooms are embedded within the hillside on the lower level, where the earth provides natural thermal stability, helping the spaces remain cool in summer and warm in winter without relying heavily on air conditioning or heating.

The living spaces are positioned on the upper floor, allowing direct access from the road above while opening panoramic views towards the landscape below.

The house enjoys a high degree of privacy. Towards the driveway, the façade appears largely closed and is clad in locally sourced stone, giving the impression that the house is carved into the hillside itself.

The project explores how architecture can work with topography, climate and material context to create a calm and energy-conscious living environment.
