Eindhoven is a rapidly growing city. To manage this transition, the municipality is carrying out extensive construction and improvement works in the city centre. Recognising the potential for disruption, the platform Open Eindhoven was created to communicate these developments clearly to residents and visitors.
As part of this identity, Bygg Architecture & Design proposed Heavy Vibe: a series of movable objects for public space. The objects are designed to mark roadworks and active construction sites while also adding character, seating and recognisable identity to the street.
Heavy Vibe is based on a three-dimensional interpretation of the Eindhoven logo, painted in the city’s signature red and 3D-printed in concrete at Weber’s Eindhoven factory. In the concept, the objects could be transported through the city by a small electric vehicle, allowing them to be easily repositioned as construction works move.
Bygg integrated wooden elements into the concrete structure, making the objects more approachable and adaptable. They can function as seats, flagpole holders, planters, bike parking or light elements, blending utility, communication and civic identity in public space.
The system was also imagined in rammed earth as a temporary and degradable version. In this material, the objects would slowly dissolve through rain and weather, making the passage of time and the temporary nature of urban works visible in the city.
